Power Control Specialist (Offshore Wind)

Description

The Power Control Specialist is responsible for the safe, compliant and reliable operation of Generation and Transmission assets from the Power Control Room on a 24/7 rostered shift.

The role applies practical subject-matter knowledge to varied and sometimes complex operational situations, working within approved procedures, TASA/OMA requirements and defined escalation routes while supporting operational continuity across Power Control and connected business areas.

Tasks and Deliverables

  • Carry out Generation and Transmission Power Control tasks in accordance with QHSE standards, TASA/OMA requirements, approved operational procedures and defined escalation routes.
  • Support timely and accurate publication of REMIT Urgent Market Messages by identifying relevant operational events, validating information and escalating where required.
  • Apply and maintain specialist technical knowledge across regions and platforms to resolve operational issues, support colleagues and inform established Power Control processes, including:
  • Knowledge/ Skills of HPPP/ PPC/ SCS operation for Active Power and Frequency Control
  • Knowledge/ Skills of HPPP/ PPC/ SCS operation for Voltage and Reactive Power Control
  • Knowledge/ Skills of HPPP/ PPC operation for WTG Control
  • Knowledge/ Skills of HPPP/ PPC/ SCS for Generation Restricted Control Engineer Duties
  • Knowledge/ Skills and Behaviours to attain the correct levels of authorisation as a Power Control Specialist
  • Knowledge of Electrical Operation Philosophies including Site information, Contingency plans, GEP locations etc
  • Deliver the safe execution of the Power Control scope, including Control Point and HV Control activities, by applying judgement within defined procedures and seeking guidance for more complex or non-standard issues.
  • SCS Alarm escalation/ handling including notification creation
  • Initial Incident Handling for Loss of Generation and Loss of Control
  • Park/ WTG Control for Maintenance
  • Park/ WTG Control for Ancillary Services
  • Critical stakeholder liaison (TSO/ DNO/ OFTO/ O&M Provider)
  • Restricted HV Control Engineer duties up to 66kV
  • Enact emergency protocol during BCP situations
  • Operate within Power Control processes and procedures, identifying missing, unclear or inefficient processes and raising practical improvement opportunities within defined boundaries.
  • Prioritise customer, stakeholder and regulatory queries within operational timescales, recognising interdependencies between Power Control, Generation, Transmission, trading, compliance, IT/OT and external network stakeholders.
  • Be an ambassador for the Asset Surveillance and Control Department.

Success Criteria and KPI's

  • Demonstrates safe, compliant and reliable operation of Generation and Transmission assets by following approved procedures and maintaining required authorisations.
  • Publishes or supports REMIT related information accurately and within required operational and regulatory timescales.
  • Handles alarms, loss of generation, loss of control and BCP events in line with agreed escalation routes, ensuring accurate notifications and handovers.
  • Maintains current technical knowledge of HPPP/PPC/SCS, Control Point and HV Control processes and applies this knowledge to varied operational assignments.
  • Identifies process gaps or improvement opportunities and raises them through the appropriate Power Control route with clear supporting evidence.
  • Supports, trains or informs colleagues on established operational processes when required, contributing to consistent Power Control delivery.
