The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Interim Payroll Manager to join the business on an initial 3-6 month basis. This role is focused on providing stability and leadership to an established payroll function, ensuring that payroll continues to run accurately, compliantly and on time for approximately 1,500 employees.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who can quickly get up to speed, take ownership of the payroll operation and confidently manage day-to-day activities while supporting and developing a small payroll team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full ownership of the monthly payroll process for approximately 1,500 employees.
  • Ensure payroll is processed accurately and in line with all statutory requirements and deadlines.
  • Lead, support and develop a Payroll Assistant.
  • Manage payroll-related queries and act as the escalation point for complex issues.
  • Oversee payroll reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies where required.
  • Maintain compliance with HMRC, PAYE, pensions and other statutory reporting obligations.
  • Support year-end payroll activities, including P60s and associated reporting requirements.
  • Monitor payroll legislation changes and ensure processes remain fully compliant.
  • Work closely with HR and other stakeholders to maintain accurate employee data and improve payroll processes.
  • Contribute to ongoing payroll improvement initiatives and support future system-related projects.

About You

  • Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll within a medium to large organisation.
  • Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation, PAYE, pensions and HMRC requirements.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising payroll staff.
  • Able to work independently, prioritise workloads and quickly establish themselves within an existing team.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment and delivering accurate results under pressure.
