Organisations bring in SAP Project Manager contractors to lead the delivery of SAP implementation, migration, and transformation programmes, bringing the combination of SAP platform knowledge and project delivery capability that these complex, high-risk programmes require. The scope of the role encompasses managing the full SAP programme lifecycle from business case through to go-live and hypercare: defining the programme governance structure, managing the SAP implementation partner relationship, overseeing the functional and technical workstreams, managing programme risks and issues, tracking scope and budget, coordinating business change and training activities, and reporting programme performance to executive and steering committee audiences. SAP Project Manager contractors are brought in when organisations lack internal programme management capability with SAP delivery experience, or when the scale of the programme justifies dedicated external programme leadership.
Clients expect SAP Project Manager contractors to bring combine deep SAP programme delivery experience with strong project management methodology and senior stakeholder management capability. Experience managing end-to-end SAP implementations or major S/4HANA migrations in organisations of comparable scale and complexity is the primary selection criterion, as the specific challenges of SAP programme delivery, including managing Activate methodology, handling the complexity of data migration and cutover, and managing the relationship with SAP implementation partners, require programme management experience that only comes from having delivered these programmes before. Familiarity with SAP Activate as the standard delivery methodology for S/4HANA programmes is expected.
