What does a quality engineer contractor do?
The Quality Engineer contractor role centres on the ability to design, implement, and maintain quality management systems and processes across manufacturing, aerospace, defence, automotive, pharmaceutical, and construction environments. Contract engagements involve developing quality plans, conducting audits and inspections, managing non-conformance and corrective action processes, performing root cause analysis, and ensuring compliance with sector-specific quality standards. Quality Engineers work within supplier quality assurance, incoming inspection, in-process quality control, and final product verification depending on the engagement.
Quality Engineer contractors need a strong understanding of quality management principles and practical experience with the standards relevant to their sector, whether ISO 9001 for general manufacturing, AS9100 for aerospace, IATF 16949 for automotive, or GMP for pharmaceuticals. Proficiency with quality tools including FMEA, SPC, 8D, and PPAP is expected. Experience with audit techniques, both internal and supplier, is widely required.
