What does a coo contractor do?
Organisations bring in COO contractors to provide executive operational leadership on a fixed-term basis, typically during a period of significant organisational change, operational transformation, leadership transition, or when a business needs to rapidly improve its operational capability or efficiency. The scope of the role varies by organisation but typically encompasses oversight of day-to-day operational delivery, process improvement and efficiency programmes, operational risk and controls, team leadership, and supporting the CEO on strategic execution. Interim COOs are brought in when the permanent role is vacant, when a specific operational challenge requires dedicated executive attention, or when the business is scaling rapidly and needs experienced operational leadership that the existing team cannot provide.
The profile expected for an interim COO engagement combines credible operational leadership experience with the ability to diagnose and address complex organisational challenges quickly. Most interim COOs bring prior experience at operations director or COO level, with a track record of improving operational performance, leading significant change programmes, and managing large teams across complex multi-function environments. What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.

Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
