About Our Outside IR35 Cloud Architect Contract Roles
What does a cloud architect contractor do?
Cloud Architect contractors design the technical blueprint for how organisations use cloud platforms. The role is strategic rather than hands-on: you define landing zone designs, network topologies, identity and access management frameworks, disaster recovery strategies, and the governance models that ensure cloud environments remain secure, compliant, and cost-effective as they scale. Clients hire cloud architect contractors when they are planning a migration, redesigning their cloud estate after an initial adoption that has become unwieldy, or establishing a multi-cloud strategy. The day-to-day involves producing architecture documentation, conducting design reviews, advising engineering teams on implementation patterns, and engaging with senior stakeholders to align cloud strategy with business objectives. A cloud architect contractor is expected to have deep expertise in at least one hyperscaler platform and a working knowledge of the alternatives.
What is the market like for cloud architect contractors?
Cloud architecture is one of the strongest segments of the UK IT contracting market. The role commands premium rates because it requires a combination of deep technical knowledge and the ability to communicate with board-level stakeholders. Demand is driven by organisations that have adopted cloud but lack the in-house expertise to govern their estates effectively. Many enterprises find themselves with sprawling, expensive cloud environments built without consistent architectural standards, and they bring in cloud architect contractors to impose order. Financial services, government, and energy are the largest hiring sectors. The market is competitive at the top end, with experienced cloud architects who hold certifications across multiple platforms and can demonstrate successful delivery of large-scale transformations commanding rates above the general architecture market.
What does Outside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as outside IR35, the engagement is treated as a business-to-business arrangement. The contractor operates through their own limited company, invoices for services, and manages their own tax affairs including corporation tax, self-assessment, and VAT where applicable.
Outside IR35 engagements are assessed against three key factors: the degree of control the client exercises over how the work is delivered, whether the contractor has a genuine right to provide a substitute, and whether there is a mutuality of obligation between the parties. Contracts that demonstrate contractor autonomy, project-based delivery, and the absence of ongoing employment obligations are more likely to sit outside IR35. Since April 2021, responsibility for making this determination sits with the end client for medium and large private sector organisations.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 28% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as outside IR35. The proportion varies by sector and role type, with some disciplines seeing a significantly higher or lower share of outside IR35 opportunities. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What cloud architect roles are usually Outside IR35?
Cloud architecture lends itself well to outside IR35 engagements. The deliverables are clear: a cloud strategy document, a landing zone design, a migration architecture, a governance framework. Many cloud architect contracts are structured as advisory or design engagements with defined outputs rather than ongoing operational roles. Consultancies and mid-market enterprises are particularly likely to offer outside IR35 cloud architect work. The contractor typically works independently, producing designs and recommendations that are then implemented by engineering teams. This separation between design and implementation strengthens the case for an outside IR35 determination.
How much do cloud architect contractors usually earn when working Outside IR35?
Contract rates for cloud architect roles typically range from £650 to £1000 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Rates shown are for outside IR35 engagements and reflect the gross day rate paid to the contractor's limited company before any personal tax obligations.
