Summary: The OpenShift / zLinux Engineer (IBM Z) role involves providing specialized technical support for the z/Linux estate within a core enterprise infrastructure platform, primarily focusing on maintaining and enhancing a secure and compliant Linux platform on IBM Z. The position requires collaboration with various platform teams and participation in both business-as-usual and project activities. The role is hybrid, requiring two days a week onsite, and is classified as outside IR35. Candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK, as sponsorship is not available.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as a technical specialist for OpenShift on IBM Z (OCPz), supporting platform stability and engineering change
- Provide BAU support across development, test and production environments (incident, problem and change management)
- Build, configure and maintain RHEL-based z/Linux virtual guests on IBM Z under z/VM
- Deliver patching, upgrades and vulnerability remediation across Linux and OpenShift platforms
- Support engineering and project activity including platform enhancements and infrastructure upgrades
- Collaborate with adjacent platform teams including mainframe, storage, network, security and application teams
- Produce and maintain technical documentation including build guides and operational runbooks
- Participate in on-call / out-of-hours support rota (approx. 1 week in 5)
Key Skills:
- Strong hands-on experience with OpenShift / container platforms (ideally OpenShift on IBM Z / OCPz)
- Proven experience working in enterprise production environments (high availability, regulated services)
- Strong Linux system administration skills (RHEL preferred)
- Experience with z/Linux (s390x) or Linux on IBM Z environments
- Working knowledge of z/VM and virtualisation concepts
- Experience delivering OS patching, upgrades and vulnerability remediation
- Familiarity with ITIL-aligned incident, problem and change management
- Ability to work independently within an established platform engineering team
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rota

Job Overview
The OpenShift / zLinux Engineer will provide specialist technical capability to support, engineer and enhance the z/Linux estate within a core enterprise infrastructure platform. This role sits within a Mainframe Services function and focuses on maintaining and improving a highly available, secure and compliant Linux platform running on IBM Z. The environment includes OpenShift on IBM Z (OCPz), z/VM and enterprise Linux systems.
