Summary: We are seeking a hands-on Network Security Engineer for a 6-month hybrid contract in London, focusing on the reliability and security of high-performance network environments. The role involves managing support tickets and delivering projects related to firewalls, web proxies, and load balancers. The ideal candidate should be able to work independently and troubleshoot effectively. This position is within a skilled Network Operations Team at a leading research organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and resolve tickets from the ITSM system, ensuring timely updates and completion in line with SLAs, including 1 week in 4 working on tier 3 tickets as part of the Network Operations Team
- Implement and maintain Firewall rules across Fortigate, Check Point, and Palo Alto firewalls
- Troubleshoot connectivity and access issues including routing problems on firewalls, web Proxy connectivity, and Firewall policy clean-up
- Perform Firewall software upgrades, configuration backups, and post-upgrade validation
- Deliver projects across firewalls, proxy, web security, and load balancers, working with multiple internal customers
- Collaborate with other teams to resolve connectivity or access issues related to Firewall configurations and security controls
- Maintain accurate configuration and change documentation for all managed devices
- Provide support and input for ongoing network security improvement initiatives
Key Skills:
- Strong hands-on experience with enterprise firewalls, particularly Palo Alto and Fortinet
- Good understanding of network security principles and Firewall rule management
- Experience working within an ITSM ticketing environment, handling incidents and service requests through to resolution
- Experience with web proxies (any vendor) and L7 traffic inspection
- Solid Routing & Switching knowledge including Layer 2/3 fundamentals, VLANs, and routing protocols
- Familiarity with TACACS and Cisco ISE for authentication and access control
- Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills
- Desirable: experience with Proxy technologies such as Blue Coat or Zscaler, knowledge of ClearPass Policy Manager (Aruba), higher-level certifications such as CCNP or vendor-specific security certifications (Fortinet NSE, Check Point CCSA/CCSE, Palo Alto PCNSA/PCNSE), and Python scripting/automation skills
