Job description

Title: Principal - Defined Contribution and Master Trust Supervision

Location: Brighton/hybrid 6 days per month in the office

The role and responsibilities

As a Principal in the Defined Contribution and Master Trust Supervision team, you will lead key supervisory relationships with authorised schemes, ensuring they continue to meet authorisation standards and that emerging risks are identified early.

You will play a central role in developing our supervisory framework to be fit for a future of fewer, bigger schemes, working across TPR and with industry stakeholders to ensure our operational readiness and deepen our understanding of schemes and the risks they present. Alongside your technical responsibilities, you will provide leadership within the team— with line management opportunities, offering coaching, carrying out Quality Assurance checks, setting clear objectives, overseeing delivery and supporting staff development.

You will lead complex interventions, provide expert challenge and guidance, and act confidently and autonomously when making decisions. Your work will contribute directly to our regulatory aims, supporting high quality supervision and strengthening our relationships with the schemes we regulate. You may also work with and oversee elements of our Multi Employer CDC multidisciplinary team, a virtual team of specialists spanning our directorate (Market Oversight) who will be building and rolling out both the authorisation and supervision of this form of scheme.

To fulfil this role, you will have strong pensions or regulatory knowledge, with credibility in complex supervision and external engagement and ideally in the Defined Contribution and Master Trust Supervision. We have several roles and will decide where best to put the successful applicant within the broader Defined Contribution and Master Trust Supervision team, when we finalise this process – according to their skillset and experience.

You will:

  • Lead, proactively manage and be responsible for the output of your line reports.
  • Take responsibility for the timely delivery of effective and appropriate intervention and outcomes across a portfolio and to be responsible for the delivery of effective regulatory outcomes.
  • Ensure effective timely and accurate management of complex and varied master trusts, DC and CDC schemes and achieve required outcomes within the team.
  • Identify themes and key risks within the portfolio to feed back to your Segment Lead, Policy and Strategy, including leading external engagement on key issues or complex intervention where required.
  • Lead by example ensuring collaboration with all stakeholders across TPR and externally, offering technical advice and guidance. Be comfortable and experienced in having robust and challenging conversations with external stakeholders.
  • Create an environment in which the team work together to produce more than they can individually whilst recognising and valuing diversity.
  • People – mutual responsibility with team members to make sure that conversations about performance development, feedback and progress against objectives happens.
  • Be responsible for the ongoing development and improvement of agreed guidance, processes and policies to support the effective and efficient operation of the department, and - as required – across TPR.
  • Represent and promote Defined Contribution and Master Trust Supervision, externally and in the wider TPR community at management, policy and other meetings.

  • Have sufficient Master trust and DC pensions or relevant commercial or regulatory experience to be credible with external stakeholders and develop our staff.

You will work closely with the Executive Director and Directors across Market Oversight, as well as other internal colleagues including the Operations Lead for Market Oversight, and other business support functions. You will also interact with partners across TPR and external stakeholders
