Summary: Our client in Cumbria is looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer for a 10–12 month contract focused on designing high-performance subsea connector solutions for harsh offshore environments. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams and will expand in technical responsibility and leadership as the candidate gains experience. The successful candidate will also mentor the engineering team while ensuring high product quality and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop subsea low- and high-voltage electrical and optical connectors, pressure housings, and sealing systems using advanced CAD tools.
  • Perform mechanical, thermal, and pressure analyses using FEA tools to validate designs for HPHT and deep-sea environments.
  • Select materials suitable for subsea and HPHT environments, including corrosion-resistant alloys and coatings for long-term deployment.
  • Specify and integrate subsea electrical connectors into mechanical assemblies, ensuring pressure resistance, watertight integrity, and system compatibility.
  • Drive design decisions that balance performance, reliability, innovation, and cost efficiency.
  • Promote standardisation and ensure consistency across and within product lines while sustaining high product quality.
  • Conduct prototype builds, pressure testing, and product qualification to relevant industry standards.
  • Support hardware qualification activities including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Integration Testing (SIT), and connector integrity testing.
  • Provide engineering support during installation, commissioning, and operational phases.

Key Skills:

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and FEA tools.
  • Strong capability in producing and interpreting technical 2D drawings.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, engineering calculations, and electrical fundamentals.
  • Expertise in sealing technologies, pressure-rated designs, and mechanical–electrical interface design.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards (API, ISO, ASME, IEC, IEEE).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative engineering solutions for the offshore energy and subsea sectors.

With increased experience and seniority, the role will involve greater technical responsibility, leadership in design activities, and mentoring of the wider engineering team.

  • Experience with subsea production systems including umbilicals, jumpers, electrical and fibre-optic connectors.
  • Hands-on experience with pressure testing and subsea connector design
