Detailed Description From Employer:

Project Overview: Mainframe Modernization ? DB2 Decoupling and COBOL Refactoring
Supporting a major modernization effort focused on decoupling a large-scale legacy DB2 database (CIF) on the mainframe and refactoring associated COBOL programs. This initiative involves replacing DB2 data access patterns with a variety of new architectural components, rather than a simple one-to-one replacement.
Key Goals:
? Eliminate direct dependencies on CIF (DB2)
? Transition to new data sources with non-uniform, non-1:1 mappings
? Maintain and enhance business-critical functionality in Payments and Client Communications Management
? Modernize how COBOL programs retrieve and process data, potentially sourcing from:
? VSAM files fed via APIs
? New DB2 cache layers via API or Kafka
? Other hybrid or event-driven architectures

Role Requirements: COBOL Developer with Adaptability in Legacy-to-Modern Transition
Core Expectations:
? Self-Starter Mindset: Ability to rapidly onboard to a new client environment, independently learn systems and data structures, and problem-solve without requiring heavy guidance from client resources.
? Collaborative Orientation: Will work with the internal York team for onboarding, peer learning, and ongoing support.
Technical Skills:
? COBOL ? Strong command of reading, modifying, and testing COBOL programs
? JCL ? Experience with job execution and batch processing in mainframe environments
? IBM MQ ? Familiarity with message queue integration
? DB2 ? Deep understanding of DB2 access methods, particularly on mainframes
? API & Data Mapping ? Experience reviewing API specs and mapping fields to source/target structures, including hands-on exploration of API data
? Nice to Have:
? Zeke ? Exposure to mainframe job scheduling
? Endevor ? Experience with mainframe source code versioning and promotion workflows
