Summary: An opportunity exists for a Senior Linux Engineer to join a public sector programme on a contract basis, focusing on delivering advanced technical expertise in enterprise Linux environments. The role involves maintaining operational SLAs, driving automation solutions, and mentoring junior team members within an agile delivery team. The position requires a strong background in Linux engineering and scripting, along with experience in managing complex IT infrastructures. The role operates in a hybrid working arrangement with occasional site travel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain operational SLAs for Linux infrastructure incidents across physical and virtual servers, DNS, NTP, RHEL Directory Services, Proxy, database, Satellite, and CEPH infrastructure
- Monitor, alert on, and maintain Linux infrastructure across all environments
- Support BAU and project implementation activities, ensuring relevant artefacts are in place for the team
- Implement strategic and technical roadmaps for Linux infrastructure and hosted applications, keeping infrastructure current
- Ensure all new components and installations meet internal and regulatory requirements
- Drive automation solutions in line with the wider DevOps strategy
- Own responsibility for changes across the environment within your technical discipline, ensuring implementation follows agreed business processes
- Own Incident, Problem, and Risk Management within your technical discipline
- Develop documentation, processes, and policies to ensure necessary governance and reporting
- Mentor and support more junior team members; liaise with vendors and collaborate across the wider engineering function
Key Skills:
- Proven experience in a Senior Linux Engineering role within a complex enterprise IT infrastructure
- Advanced experience with Bash and Python scripting
- Strong hands-on experience with open-source Ansible automation tooling
- Experience with virtualised networking platforms (VMware / Hyper-V)
- Solid understanding of common services and protocols including HTTPS, SSH, DNS, NTP, and SSL
- Demonstrable experience troubleshooting Linux issues to 4th line
- Sound understanding of database technologies including PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and MongoDB
- Experience managing Linux certificates across enterprise environments
- Good experience of Squid proxy administration
- Experience with systems monitoring infrastructure (e.g. Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana)
- Demonstrable Agile / DevOps working practices
- Working knowledge of Confluence, Jira, and JSM
- Good understanding of both on-premise and cloud-based IT infrastructure

Reporting to the Lead Linux Engineer, you will deliver advanced technical expertise across enterprise Linux environments, driving stability, security, and performance. You will work autonomously within an agile delivery team, contributing to sprint commitments, automation initiatives, and platform improvements across a complex, multi-environment infrastructure.
