Summary: The role of Temporary Part-Time Legal Assistant at South Gloucestershire Council involves providing legal support primarily in adult social care, mental capacity, and education law. The position requires advising social workers, maintaining court records, assisting solicitors with applications, and conducting legal research. The role is part-time, requiring 22 hours of work per week, with some flexibility for remote work. The candidate will work closely with a team and engage with various stakeholders in the legal process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise social workers on the Re X process to authorise a deprivation of liberty in the community and file applications with the court.
  • Keep a record of the progress of cases filed with the court, the orders made, and follow up with social workers to ensure compliance with court orders.
  • Assist solicitors by completing applications to the court under section 16 Mental Capacity Act 2005 for welfare orders, updating bundles, e-filing orders, obtaining sealed orders, and actioning court directions.
  • Undertake legal research for solicitors and provide advice to the client department on care and support, mental health law, and education law.
  • Attend round table meetings and court hearings with counsel, where necessary.

Key Skills:

  • Law degree or CILEx level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice or relevant post-graduate qualification; SQE or LPC desirable.
  • Experience in a legal department, particularly in adult social care, mental capacity issues, or education law, ideally within a Local Authority setting.
  • Knowledge of Adult Social Care law and court processes.
  • Able to work as part of a team under pressure within tight timescales.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organisational skills, and IT skills.
