Summary: The Lead Test Engineer will oversee automated testing for a significant public health program within a digital transformation initiative. This role involves leading a skilled test team, defining automation strategies, and maintaining hands-on coding responsibilities to ensure quality throughout the delivery process. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to integrate testing into the CI/CD pipeline effectively. The contract duration is four months, with a focus on best practices in automated testing using Playwright and related tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the definition and implementation of test strategy across multiple workstreams.
  • Drive best practices in automated testing, with deep hands-on expertise in Playwright and related tools/frameworks.
  • Mentor and upskill other engineers in automation techniques and tooling.
  • Collaborate closely with developers, BAs, and DevOps to ensure testing is fully integrated into the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Own defect triage, root cause analysis, and quality reporting to stakeholders.
  • Ensure testing approaches align with GDS standards and central government delivery models.

Key Skills:

  • Extensive, demonstrable Playwright automation experience (TypeScript / JavaScript preferred).
  • Background in public health or central government digital delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of automation frameworks, tooling, and best practices.
  • Proficiency in writing clean, maintainable automated test scripts.
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, etc.).
  • Comfortable leading test planning, risk analysis, and quality governance.
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced Agile environment.

We’re looking for a hands-on Lead Test Engineer to take ownership of automated testing across a high-impact public health programme. This role sits within a large-scale digital transformation initiative in the Public Health space. You’ll lead a small but highly skilled test team, set the automation strategy, and still keep your hands in the code to ensure quality at every stage of delivery.
