Summary: The Lead Sonographer is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Ultrasound departments across multiple sites, ensuring high-quality diagnostic ultrasound services while adhering to national and trust targets. This role involves both clinical and managerial responsibilities, including staff management, performance monitoring, and liaising with medical professionals. The Lead Sonographer will also oversee the recruitment and training of staff, as well as the maintenance of ultrasound equipment. The position requires a commitment to patient care and the implementation of trust policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently assess and interpret ultrasound scans across a wide range of examinations.
- Produce written reports of ultrasound examinations autonomously.
- Promote and ensure high standards of patient care and comfort.
- Liaise with referring clinicians and nursing staff to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Monitor demand and capacity, communicating performance issues to the diagnostic access manager.
- Manage all Ultrasound staff, including advanced clinical practitioners and assistants.
- Conduct appraisals and personal development plans for staff.
- Support clinical governance in investigating patient/client complaints.
- Recruit and select new staff for the ultrasound department.
- Oversee the selection, commissioning, and de-commissioning of ultrasound equipment.
- Implement and monitor trust policies and procedures.
- Liaise with Consultant Radiologists regarding protocols and patient pathways.
- Ensure a robust QA programme for ultrasound equipment and staff competency.

To be a member of the senior management team attending all relevant meetings. Conduct service reviews when required and take part in business planning.
