Summary: The Lead Secondary Engineer (P+C) will oversee and manage secondary engineering activities for SSEN & SPEN substation projects, ensuring compliance with project specifications and standards. This role involves leading a skilled team, coordinating with various stakeholders, and managing design packages from project initiation to the As-Built stage. The engineer will also participate in technical discussions and handle procurement responsibilities related to equipment and subcontractors. The position is based in Glasgow with a hybrid working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead all secondary engineering activities from project start to As-Built stage.
  • Instruct, supervise, and coordinate with engineering teams, partners, and suppliers.
  • Review P&C design packages and ensure compliance with design change management processes.
  • Attend Design Review meetings and Hazard review meetings as required.
  • Lead secondary design responsibilities including SLD, protection and control schemes, and SCADA/SCIS architecture development.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and review their deliverables.
  • Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers.
  • Lead technical responsibilities for procurement of equipment and subcontractors.
  • Manage secondary engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk, and change management activities.
  • Oversee secondary engineering for large and complex EHV/HV AIS & GIS projects in the UK.

Key Skills:

  • Bachelor or master’s in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Extensive substation engineering experience in utilities, particularly transmission electrical network design.
  • Proven experience with greenfield and brownfield projects.
  • Knowledge of SSEN & SPEN requirements and standards.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
  • Proactive team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Expert knowledge in substation secondary design engineering and AC & DC system calculations.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office; knowledge of MicroStation and AutoCAD required.
  • Fluency in English – both written and spoken.

Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for Lead Secondary Engineer (P+C) on a 6 Month Contract, based in Glasgow/ Hybrid

Role Summary

The Lead Secondary Engineer (P+C) will lead and work in a skilled team on a wide range of SSEN & SPEN substation projects. The position will focus on the project and tender engineering and its interfaces and scope of work involved in HV to meet customer needs, legislative demands and standards.

Overall responsible for managing & leading all secondary engineering activities from project start till the As-Built stage with strict adherence to Project Specifications & our standards including QA/QC, HSSE & Integrity.

Instruct, supervise & coordinate with other engineering team within the company (local & remote), internal & external partners, sub-suppliers, secondary engineers & civil engineers.

Review of P&C design packages as per NG/ET/SR188

Input to the development of the DID

Submitting completed Design Packages for Design Compliance Audit

Ensuring all design changes are managed in accordance with the design change management process

Attending Design Review meetings (DRMs) and Hazard review meetings (HRMs) as required

Review and certify the design packages and issue the DCAAR

Lead Secondary design responsibilities including but not limited to SLD, protection and control schemes, interfacing of P&C with new and existing plant and equipment, panel general arrangements, AC & DC distribution systems, battery and battery chargers sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, signal lists, setting calculation, cable block diagrams, multicore & fiber optic cable schedules, and cables core sheets, SCADA/SCIS architecture development and review of designs. etc.

Coordinate with suppliers and reviewing their deliverables. Check remote end requirements and provide input to supplier.

Specialised in Substation protection and control system and its architecture

Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers, handle site queries and take necessary actions up to as-built documentation

Lead technical responsibilities for procurement of equipment and subcontractors, including development of project specific technical specifications and accompanying documentation, technical review of quotes and lead technical discussion with regards to scope of works and technical requirements.

Secondary engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk & change management activities.

Secondary engineer of large and complex EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation (AIS & GIS) projects in UK.

Requirements

Bachelor or master’s in electrical engineering or equivalent

Extensive years of substation engineering experience in utilities, particularly transmission electrical network design.

Proven experience with both greenfield and brownfield type projects.

Knowledge of required SSEN & SPEN requirements and standards.

Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it

Result orientated team player with a proactive approach.

Excellent in communication, to interact with external and internal parties at all levels in a multi-cultural environment.

Expert knowledge in Substation secondary design engineering, AC & DC system calculation, compilation of signal list, setting calculation, interface engineering and preparing cable schedules

Strong in MS Office, knowledge in MicroStation and AutoCAD is required.

Fluency in English – both written and spoken
