Summary: The Lead/Principal Safety Engineer role at a leading aerospace and security company involves overseeing safety analysis within the Integrated Sensor And Non-Kinetic Effects (ISANKE) and Integrated Communications Systems (ICS) TDP programme. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist safety advice to support product safety authorization.
  • Ensure safety activities follow the safety management plan and are complete and correct.
  • Identify and analyze intrinsic and functional hazards, mitigating risks to an ALARP level.
  • Elicit safety requirements and flow them down to appropriate levels.
  • Review subsystem safety analyses and incorporate outcomes into integrated safety assessments.
  • Document the integrated safety assessment as per the safety management plan.
  • Present safety assessment summaries at design reviews.

Key Skills:

  • Experience in safety analysis of complex systems in safety-critical industries.
  • Experience across various engineering life cycle phases.
  • Experience in leading and delivering safety work packages across multiple teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • A passion for promoting and improving safety culture.
  • A relevant STEM degree (desirable).
  • Experience with ARP4754B, ARP4761A, RTCA DO-254, or DO-178C (desirable).
  • Knowledge of lasers, radar systems, and/or sensors (desirable).
  • Experience with tools like Cameo Systems Modeler, IBM DOORS, etc. (desirable).

Our client a leading aerospace and security company has an exciting opportunity for Lead/Principal Safety Engineer as part of the Integrated Sensor And Non-Kinetic Effects (ISANKE) and Integrated Communications Systems (ICS) TDP programme.

This role would suit a Lead/Principal Safety Engineer who:

  • Is comfortable working across the whole system and able to quickly develop an understanding of complex interactions and dependencies
  • Is familiar with aircraft level safety regulations and analysis
  • Is motivated to work closely with multi-disciplined teams to get down into the detail
  • Is capable of leading the delivery of system safety artefacts ensuring other teams/systems/aircraft level dependencies are identified and shared

Successful applicants will be able to:

Providing specialist safety advice to the SDA, to support their authorization of the Product safety, in accordance with Company processes

Ensuring that safety activities conducted on the Programme, within the scope of the TDP Systems, follow the plan described in the safety management plan and that the analysis is complete and correct.

Identifying and analysing intrinsic hazards, including mitigation to reduce the residual safety risks to an ALARP level for the ISANKE and ICS TDP system

Identifying and analysing functional hazards, including mitigation to reduce the residual safety risks to an ALARP level for the ISANKE and ICS TDP system

Eliciting ISANKE and ICS TDP safety requirements and flowing these down to the appropriate level

Reviewing individual TDP Subsystem System safety analysis and incorporating the outcomes in the integrated ISANKE and ICS analysis.

Review aircraft level safety analysis and ensure it aligns with ISANKE and ICS TDP Systems safety analysis

Documenting the integrated ISANKE and ICS TDP Systems safety assessment as described in the safety management plan.

Presenting a summary of the integrated ISANKE and ICS TDP Systems safety assessment at the ISANKE and ICS TDP Design Reviews.

What we need from you:

You really must have:

  • Experience of safety analysis of complex systems in a safety-critical industry
  • Experience across a number of engineering life cycle phases
  • Experience in leading and delivery a safety work package across multiple teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders of varying seniorities
  • A passion for promoting and improving safety culture

It would be nice, but not essential, if you had:

  • A relevant STEM degree
  • Experience with ARP4754B, ARP4761A, RTCA DO-254, or DO-178C
  • Experience with a high degree of design complexity and significant levels of uncertainty
  • Knowledge of lasers, radar systems, and/or sensors and defensive aids systems
  • Awareness of Information Security
  • Involvement in cross-industry safety initiatives, such as via the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET) or Safety-Critical Systems Club (SCSC)

Experience with any of the following tools will be a plus:

  • Cameo Systems Modeler
  • IBM DOORS
  • Adelard ASCE
  • Isograph Reliability Work Bench
