Summary: The Lead Data Engineer/Consultant role focuses on leveraging Python and SQL expertise to enhance data processes within a leading UK telecommunications company. The position requires hands-on experience in data engineering and consultancy, with a strong emphasis on innovation and process improvement. The successful candidate will work in a hybrid model, spending two days a week in the Paddington office, and will be responsible for developing and optimizing data pipelines and methodologies. This is a 12-month contract role classified as inside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enhancing Location Inference Models by developing and refining algorithms for user location accuracy.
- Designing and validating concepts for visualizing population density using mobile network data.
- Building and optimizing data pipelines for efficiency and scalability.
- Driving methodological advancements in data processing and modeling practices.
- Ensuring outputs align with business needs and provide actionable insights.
- Responding to technical challenges to maintain data integrity and consistency.
Key Skills:
- Strong Lead Data Engineering / Data Consultant experience with hands-on capabilities.
- Extensive experience in SQL and Python.
- Experience with platforms/frameworks such as PySpark and DataBricks.
- Knowledge of IaC tools such as Terraform.
- Ability to demonstrate value added through innovation or process improvement.
- Strong experience in writing, deploying, and optimizing code.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and large-scale data processing.
- Proficiency with Git for version control.
- Strong statistical and mathematical background.
- Ability to work with geospatial data and spatial analysis techniques.

Strong Data Consultancy experience is also required for this role.

Required Skills/Experience
- Strong Lead Data Engineering / Data Consultant experience - Must also have hands-on experience, rather than just mentoring/leading a team
- Extensive experience in SQL Python
- Experience of platforms/frameworks such as PySpark and DataBricks
- IaC tools such as terraform
- Looking for candidates to provide examples of where they have added value to a team through innovation or process improvement
- Strong experience in writing, deploying, and optimising code (Python, SQL).
- Extensive experience creating and implementing methodologies/algorithms in an automated workflow.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure
- Deep understanding of databases and ability to write efficient analytical queries.
- Hands-on experience in developing, testing, and deploying complex data models and methodologies.
- Proficiency with Git for version control and collaboration.
- Strong statistical and mathematical background with an ability to apply advanced analytics to real-world data challenges.
- Experience with large-scale data processing
- Ability to work with geospatial data and spatial analysis techniques.
Desirable Skills/Experience
- GIS experience and proficiency with geospatial libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, QGIS, PostGIS).
- Familiarity with Databricks and distributed computing frameworks (e.g. Spark).
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and workflow automation.
- Experience with data visualisation tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent.
- Knowledge of deploying machine learning models into production environments.
Key Accountabilities and deliverables:
- Enhancing Location Inference Models: Develop and refine algorithms that improve the accuracy and precision of inferred user locations using MND data.
- Localised Population Density Insights: Design, prototype, and validate a concept for understanding and visualising population density at a granular level using mobile network data.
- Data Pipeline Development & Optimisation: Work with engineers to build and optimise data pipelines, ensuring efficiency and scalability.
- Continuous Improvement: Drive methodological advancements and improvements in data processing and modelling practices.
- Customer-Centric Approach: Ensure outputs align with business needs, providing actionable insights to customers and stakeholders.
- Technical Support & Issue Resolution: Respond to technical challenges efficiently, ensuring data integrity and consistency.
