Summary: The Laboratory Research Assistant role focuses on supporting an antibacterial-vaccine programme within a dynamic spin-out company. The position involves hands-on molecular microbiology tasks and requires a Master's degree in a related field. The role emphasizes collaboration and offers mentorship from experienced scientists. It is a fixed-term contract for six months based in Central London.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Molecular biology tasks including DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, and small-scale protein purification.
  • Routine culture work and sterile-technique experiments to generate and characterise bacterial strains.
  • Support sequencing, microscopy, and proteomic workflows through sample preparation.
  • Record, analyse, and present results using standard software; contribute to lab meetings and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain reagent stocks, uphold safety/biosafety compliance, and assist with general laboratory upkeep.

Key Skills:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with core molecular or microbiological techniques.
  • Strong organisational skills and meticulous record-keeping.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.
  • Experience with bacterial genetic manipulation (e.g. transformation, CRISPR, transposon mutagenesis) is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety and sterile protocols.
