Kubernetes Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced OpenShift / Kubernetes Infrastructure Engineer to support a major customer programme focused on the deployment and scale-out of modern on-premises infrastructure.

This is a hands-on engineering role, responsible for deploying and commissioning the infrastructure required to support customer applications across Red Hat OpenShift and Wind River platforms.

You will work closely with solution architects, Red Hat and Wind River, as well as customer engineering and operations teams.

Following the deployment of initial reference environments, you will help take the solution through to repeatable, large-scale production deployment.

Key Responsibilities

• Deploy and configure the infrastructure required to host customer workloads on Red Hat OpenShift and Wind River platforms.
• Build and commission Kubernetes/OpenShift clusters at scale, following approved architecture, designs and Methods of Procedure.
• Work with architects and OEM partners to transition initial reference clusters into repeatable production deployments.
• Translate high-level architecture into detailed low-level designs, configuration worksheets and build requirements.
• Use information from CMDB, IPAM and other infrastructure sources to support accurate and consistent deployments.
• Leverage automation and Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) to streamline and standardise cluster deployment.
• Troubleshoot deployment and infrastructure issues and ensure environments meet agreed technical requirements.
• Contribute engineering feedback to improve designs, deployment processes, test plans and documentation.
• Support customer acceptance testing and resolve issues identified during validation.
• Produce and maintain clear, repeatable build and operational documentation.
• Support clusters through early life and assist with transition into customer operations.
• Deliver knowledge transfer and provide technical guidance to customer teams.
• Participate in technical workshops with customers, architects, OEMs and delivery teams.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong hands-on experience deploying Kubernetes and/or Red Hat OpenShift in on-premises environments.
• Proven experience building bare-metal Kubernetes/OpenShift clusters.
• Practical experience with infrastructure automation and Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP).
• Ability to work from high-level designs and develop detailed low-level build/configuration requirements.
• Experience working with CMDB, IPAM and infrastructure configuration data.
• Comfortable working to formal deployment procedures and Methods of Procedure.
• Good understanding of physical infrastructure and data-centre requirements for on-premises platforms.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers.

Desirable Skills

• Red Hat Virtualization (RHV).
• OpenStack, particularly Red Hat or Wind River implementations.
• OpenShift Telco Network Cloud (TNC) reference architectures.
• KubeVirt and hosting virtual machines on OpenShift.
• Kubernetes networking, including: Calico, MetalLB, Istio / service mesh.
• Kubernetes storage, including Pure Storage and Portworx.
• Cluster deployment across Arista or Cisco network fabrics.
• CI/CD and DevOps practices.
• GitLab.
