Junior Infrastructure & Network Engineer 6 Month Contract – Hybrid Working Pimlico Banks are recruiting a Junior Infrastructure & Network Engineer to join the IT Infrastructure team of an established organisation in Birmingham.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone at the beginning of their IT career to gain hands-on experience across networking, Linux servers, virtualisation and enterprise infrastructure.
We're not looking for years of commercial experience. You might be a recent IT/Computer Science graduate, have a year or two of IT support or infrastructure experience, or simply be someone who has developed strong technical knowledge through your own projects and interests.
If you've built a home server, configured your own firewall, experimented with Linux, networking or virtual machines, we'd particularly like to hear from you.
The role will involve:
- Supporting the deployment and configuration of network infrastructure
- Working with switches, routers and firewalls
- Building and provisioning physical servers
- Installing and configuring Linux operating systems
- Supporting virtualised environments
- Assisting with server patching and infrastructure maintenance
- Helping with the installation of servers and network equipment at different sites
- Following established technical and security processes
- Troubleshooting issues and escalating where appropriate
- Creating and maintaining technical documentation
The role will give you exposure to a broad infrastructure environment including Cisco networking, Check Point and Fortinet security technologies, SD-WAN, Linux servers and physical Dell server hardware.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has a good basic understanding of networking concepts such as TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching and firewalls
- Has some familiarity with Linux and is comfortable learning more
- Understands the basic components of PCs and servers
- Has a genuine interest in infrastructure, networking and technology
- Enjoys troubleshooting and figuring out how things work
- Is keen to learn from experienced infrastructure engineers
- Is comfortable getting hands-on with physical hardware
- Has a full driving licence and is willing to travel UK wide occasionally when required
A degree isn't essential. We're equally interested in candidates who have developed their skills through self-study, certifications, homelabs or personal IT projects.
Capability, technical curiosity and a genuine interest in infrastructure are more important than having a perfect CV.
You'll be joining a highly experienced infrastructure team and working alongside engineers with extensive knowledge across networking, servers and security.
This is an initial six-month contract, based a minimum of 3 days per week onsite in Birmingham, with occasional travel to other locations.
