Summary: The role of Interim Senior Legal Counsel - Construction involves providing expert legal advice on construction law, managing a diverse portfolio of legal matters, and ensuring compliance throughout all project stages. This is a 12-month temporary contract based in Birmingham, aimed at supporting the company's growth in the construction and real estate development sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal advice on all aspects of construction law, including procurement, contracts, disputes and regulatory compliance.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of construction-related contracts and agreements, including JCT, NEC and bespoke forms.
  • Support the business in the management of claims, disputes and adjudications, working with external counsel where appropriate.
  • Advise on risk allocation in project documentation and support project teams in mitigating legal and commercial risks.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the business, including project managers, commercial teams and senior leadership, to deliver practical, solutions-focused legal guidance.
  • Manage relationships with external law firms to ensure cost-effective and high-quality service delivery.
  • Support corporate governance and ensure compliance with applicable construction and regulatory requirements.

Key Skills:

  • Qualified solicitor with 5 + years’ PQE, with significant experience in construction law (contentious and/or non-contentious).
  • Solid knowledge of standard form contracts (e.g. JCT, NEC) and experience drafting and negotiating amendments.
  • Experience advising on large-scale construction or infrastructure projects, ideally in-house or with a top-tier private practice firm.
  • Strong negotiation, drafting and problem-solving skills.
  • Commercially astute with the ability to balance legal risk against business objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence at senior level.

The Role
