Summary: The Interim Head of Compliance (SMF16) role involves providing senior leadership to the Compliance function of a UK-regulated insurance business during a transitional period. The successful candidate will ensure strong regulatory oversight and governance while working closely with the executive team. This position is a 3-6 month contract with hybrid working arrangements. The role requires extensive experience in compliance leadership within the insurance industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as SMF16, leading the Compliance function and overseeing the firm’s compliance risk profile
- Maintain and oversee the Compliance Framework, ensuring it continues to operate effectively
- Deliver the Compliance Monitoring Plan, including ongoing monitoring and assurance activities
- Provide compliance oversight across third-party and delegated arrangements
- Support senior leadership with regulatory engagement and reporting obligations
- Prepare and present Compliance MI and Board/Committee reporting
- Provide pragmatic regulatory guidance to stakeholders across the business
- Support ongoing SMCR and Fit & Proper oversight, helping maintain a strong compliance culture
Key Skills:
- Extensive experience in a senior Compliance leadership role within the insurance industry, preferably insurance, MGA or carrier experience
- SMF16 approval or previous experience performing the SMF16 function
- Strong understanding of the UK regulatory environment (FCA / PRA)
- Experience overseeing delegated authority or third-party distribution arrangements
- Track record of producing and presenting Board and Committee reporting
- Comfortable stepping into a role quickly and providing leadership in an interim capacity
- Strong stakeholder management skills and a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach

Coopman Search is supporting a UK-regulated insurance business in London with the appointment of an Interim Head of Compliance (SMF16) on a 3-6 month basis. This role will provide senior leadership to the Compliance function during a transitional period, ensuring the business continues to maintain strong regulatory oversight and governance. The successful candidate will work closely with the executive team and play a key role in maintaining the compliance framework and regulatory engagement.
