Summary: The Interim Finance Director role is a 6-month fixed-term contract for a private equity-backed business in the energy sector, based in Milton Keynes. The position involves overseeing the finance department, leading commercial finance initiatives, and supporting strategic decision-making while reporting directly to the CFO. The ideal candidate will have experience in fast-paced environments and a strong background in finance leadership, particularly in private equity contexts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as second-in-command to the CFO, taking a hands-on leadership role across all finance activities
- Directly manage, coach & develop the Financial Controller and FP&A Manager
- Lead commercial finance processes including budgeting, forecasting/reforecasting, KPI tracking, and strategic planning
- Lead on the Q4 interim audit and year-end process
- Partner closely with commercial and operational teams to influence business performance
- Drive improvements in financial reporting, controls, and process efficiency
- Take an active involvement in automating processes and controls - further supporting on the recent new system integration
- Support board reporting, investor updates, and private equity engagement
- Play a key role in supporting the CFO in delivering the business's value creation plan
Key Skills:
- Experienced Finance Director or senior finance leader with a background in PE-backed or agile, commercial environments
- Strong commercial acumen and a track record of driving business performance through finance
- Hands-on leadership style with experience managing high-performing finance teams
- Able to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day operational oversight
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
- Comfortable in a transformation environment and able to hit the ground running

About The Role
As the CFO’s trusted deputy, you’ll take ownership of the day-to-day finance function, lead commercial finance initiatives, and support strategic decision-making across the business. You’ll also manage and develop two direct reports: the Financial Controller and the FP&A Manager. Your focus will be on improving financial visibility, enabling performance, and helping to drive value creation for both internal stakeholders and private equity investors.
