Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach, and manage a team of underwriters responsible for Buy-to-Let credit decisions.
  • Use your personal delegated lending authority (£5m) to review complex or non-standard applications.
  • Present lending cases above mandate to the parent company where required.
  • Oversee fraud detection systems (e.g., CIFAS, SIRA), investigate suspicious activity, and liaise with external fraud agencies.
  • Support training and assessment for new underwriters and mandate holders.
  • Ensure credit practices align with internal policy and regulatory expectations.
  • Prepare reports for executive management and credit committees.

Key Skills:

  • Extensive credit underwriting experience in financial services, with a strong track record in Buy-to-Let and portfolio lending.
  • Current personal mandate of £2m+ (held for at least 10 years).
  • Experience leading and mentoring high-performing teams.
  • Strong working knowledge of financial crime frameworks (AML, CTF, sanctions).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a contract role and deliver quickly.

We’re supporting a specialist property lender in their search for an Interim Credit Manager to lead their Credit Underwriting and Financial Crime team during a key period of growth. This is a senior-level contract ideal for someone with deep expertise in Buy-to-Let lending , hands-on leadership experience, and the ability to step into a business and make an immediate impact.

About the Role

Reporting to the Credit Director, you’ll manage a team of 9 and hold a personal lending mandate of £5m. You’ll oversee the end-to-end credit process, support lending decisions on complex cases, and take ownership of fraud prevention and financial crime controls. The business is scaling and this role is essential to ensuring lending activity remains responsible, compliant, and commercially sound.
