The role
As a Consultant Interaction Designer, you’ll design journeys and interactions which helps users complete their goals. You’ll work closely with other user-centred design roles, such as User Researchers and Content Designers, to solve complex and interesting problems for our clients. You’ll create designs based on insights from user research and data, apply best practice design principles, and make complex processes easy to use.
Essential Experience
To succeed in this role, you need experience of designing to meet user needs. You don’t need to have previously held the job title ‘interaction designer’. In your CV and the interview, please show how you have:
- created designs and prototypes based on insights from user research and data
- designed solutions to make complex processes easy to understand
- ensure your work is inclusive and accessible
- placed accessible design practices at the heart of your process
- clearly documented design decisions and articulated your rationale
- taken a supportive role in user research to test your designs
- designed to government service standards
In addition to interaction design skills, there are essential core skills you’ll need to work effectively as a consultant. In the interview, please show how you have:
- taken a methodical and considered approach to solving problems
- planned your own tasks, to achieve the aims of your project
- respectfully challenged decisions or solutions you didn’t agree with
In your interview we’ll ask you to present a piece of work which demonstrates these topics. We’ll also ask you questions based around these topics.
Desirable experience
There are some areas of experience which are not essential, but they are relevant to this role. If you don’t have this experience please do still apply, as we can coach you in these areas when you join us:
- the Government Digital Service (GDS) assessment process
- using prototyping tools
- HTML and CSS
- experience working in Agile delivery teams
- planning and facilitating workshops

Salary
Consultant salary range: £45,000 - £63,000
