About Our Inside IR35 Data Contract Roles
What does a data contractor do?
Data contractors are engaged across the full spectrum of data disciplines, including data engineering, data analysis, data architecture, data science, business intelligence, and data governance. The data contracting market is one of the largest and most active segments of the UK technology and professional services contracting space, driven by the near-universal recognition across industries that data is a strategic asset that requires specialist expertise to manage and exploit effectively. Contractors are brought in where permanent data capability does not exist, where specific technical expertise is needed for a defined project, or where additional capacity is required within an existing data team during a period of high demand or transformation.
The specific skills required depend on the discipline and the nature of the engagement. Data engineers need proficiency in SQL, Python, and cloud data platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, alongside experience with orchestration and transformation tools such as dbt, Airflow, and Databricks. Data analysts and BI professionals need strong SQL and visualisation skills, with Power BI and Tableau being the most commonly required tools in the UK market. Data architects need experience designing enterprise-scale data platforms and governance frameworks. Data scientists need statistical and machine learning expertise alongside production engineering capability. Across all data disciplines, the ability to work with messy, real-world data, engage stakeholders on data requirements, and deliver outputs that are trusted and used by the business is consistently valued above theoretical expertise.
What is the market like for data contractors?
The market for Data contractors is one of the most consistently strong and growing segments of the UK contracting market. Demand is driven by the continuing expansion of data volumes, the growing maturity of cloud data platforms, and the increasing expectation that organisational decisions should be grounded in data. The market spans a very wide range of specialisms and rate levels, from analytics and reporting roles through to senior data architecture and AI-adjacent data engineering positions. Cloud data platform skills, particularly around Databricks, Snowflake, and the Azure data ecosystem, have commanded the strongest rate growth over the past two years, while demand for Power BI and SQL skills remains reliably high across the broader market.
What does Inside IR35 mean?
IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.
Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.
On QualityContracts.co.uk, approximately 49% of roles with a stated IR35 status are classified as inside IR35, making it the most common arrangement across the contract market. The proportion varies by sector and role type. Each listing on this page displays its IR35 status where provided by the hiring organisation.
What data roles are usually Inside IR35?
Around 60% of broad data contracts with a stated status are inside IR35, concentrated in financial services, government, and large organisations with established data functions. The operational end of data work, maintaining data pipelines, producing regular data quality reports, and supporting business users with data access requests, aligns with inside IR35 indicators. Contractors in inside IR35 data roles are typically embedded in the client's data team and operate within their governance frameworks and toolchains.
How much do data contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?
Contract rates for data roles typically range from £450 to £800 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
