About Our Inside IR35 Case Handler Contract Roles

What does a case handler contractor do?

Case Handler contractors are engaged to manage, investigate, and resolve individual cases within regulated complaint handling, claims processing, remediation, and compliance review programmes. The work involves reviewing case files against regulatory criteria, conducting fair and thorough assessments, making outcome decisions within defined frameworks, and producing clearly written determination letters. Case Handler contractors are most commonly engaged by financial services firms running large-scale remediation or complaint handling programmes, by the Financial Ombudsman Service, and by insurance firms processing complex claims. Demand typically surges when regulatory enforcement actions or thematic reviews require firms to process large volumes of cases within tight deadlines.

Case Handler contractors need strong analytical and written communication skills, combined with the ability to apply regulatory criteria consistently across high volumes of cases. Experience with FCA complaint handling rules (DISP) and familiarity with the regulatory framework relevant to the specific remediation programme are widely expected. Proficiency with case management systems and the ability to maintain quality and consistency under throughput pressure are essential. Senior case handlers are expected to conduct quality assurance, mentor junior handlers, and liaise with compliance teams on complex or escalated cases.

What is the market like for case handler contractors?

The Case Handler contract market is a cyclical but high-volume market, driven by the waves of remediation and complaint handling programmes that follow FCA enforcement actions, thematic reviews, and industry-wide redress exercises. PPI was the largest single driver of case handler demand in recent history, and while that programme has concluded, subsequent remediation exercises in areas such as motor finance commissions, insurance mis-selling, and banking complaints have maintained demand. The market tends to ramp quickly when new programmes launch and taper as backlogs are cleared, making it well suited to contractors who can mobilise at short notice.

What does Inside IR35 mean?

IR35 is UK tax legislation that determines whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or working in a manner that resembles employment. When a contract is classified as inside IR35, income tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, typically via an umbrella company or agency PAYE. Headline day rates on inside IR35 engagements are generally higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for the tax and employment cost structure.

Inside IR35 determinations are made where the working arrangements are considered to resemble employment, based on factors including the level of client control, the absence of a genuine right of substitution, and the presence of mutuality of obligation. Since April 2021, the end client is responsible for making this determination for medium and large private sector organisations. Many employers in financial services, government, and professional services assess the majority of their contractor engagements as inside IR35.

What case handler roles are usually Inside IR35?

Case handler contracts sit firmly inside IR35. The role involves processing cases within the client's systems, following their decision-making frameworks, and meeting their SLAs and quality standards. Financial services firms managing complaints, insurance companies processing claims, and government departments administering benefit assessments hire contract case handlers in significant numbers. The work is process-driven and operates within tight procedural guidelines.

How much do case handler contractors usually earn when working Inside IR35?

Contract rates for case handler roles typically range from £250 to £500 per day, depending on the scope of the role, required expertise, and the delivery expectations of the engagement. Inside IR35 rates are typically 15% to 30% higher than equivalent outside IR35 roles to account for tax and national insurance deducted at source by the fee-payer.
