Summary: The role of Freelance Infrastructure & Platform Technology Engineer involves leading the design and implementation of private cloud and platform technologies for a prominent UK financial services organization. The engineer will manage technical project workloads, provide expert support during incidents, and contribute to business continuity planning. This position requires collaboration with various IT teams to ensure seamless integration and maintenance of services. The role is based in Liverpool and operates in a hybrid working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and optimisation of the organisation’s private cloud and platform technology stack, covering Windows, virtualisation, storage, DR, and backup services
  • Manage technical project workloads, ensuring high-quality delivery of platform implementations, upgrades, and change activities
  • Support the introduction and configuration of new infrastructure technologies, working closely with solution architects
  • Provide expert-level support during critical incidents, owning root-cause analysis and coordinating escalations with third-party vendors
  • Maintain detailed technology documentation, including LLDs, as-built documentation, and operational handovers
  • Execute platform maintenance and compliance tasks, including patching, upgrades, and infrastructure lifecycle management
  • Contribute to business continuity and DR planning, ensuring backup, restore, and audit requirements are met
  • Collaborate with wider IT teams to integrate new services, transition solutions into BAU, and maintain strong cross-team communication
  • Act as a technical leader, supporting team members, mentoring engineers, and promoting high professional standards

Key Skills:

  • Strong expertise in WinTel technologies including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Windows Server (2012–2019), and ADFS
  • Deep knowledge of enterprise virtualisation platforms such as VMware vSphere, Nutanix, and HCI solutions
  • Hands-on experience configuring DR, backup, and restore platforms (e.g., Veeam)
  • Understanding of core networking principles (TCP/IP, routing, firewall concepts)
  • Experience producing high-quality technical documentation and supporting project delivery
  • Familiarity with virtual desktop technologies, Office 365 services, SCCM/Intune, and load-balancing solutions (e.g., F5 / NetScaler)
  • Scripting knowledge (PowerShell) and awareness of DevOps, automation, containers (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Cloud platform exposure in Azure or AWS
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a structured, collaborative, and customer-focused working style
