Summary: The role of a Civils and Highways Engineer involves supporting senior engineers in designing and delivering highway and structures schemes from inception to completion. The position requires managing projects, ensuring financial control, and implementing schemes while adhering to design standards and safety considerations. The engineer will also represent the team in consultations and maintain technical expertise while mentoring junior staff. This is a long-term contract role classified as inside IR35.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Propose scheme options and prepare designs from inception to detailed design and implementation.
  • Establish agreed solutions with stakeholders and manage project staff and external consultants.
  • Prepare estimates and monitor project costs to ensure completion within budgets.
  • Prepare, tender, and assess contract documentation for construction works.
  • Represent the team at meetings and assist in consultations on scheme proposals.
  • Maintain personal technical expertise and encourage development of assistant engineers/students.

Key Skills:

  • Educated to HND or degree level in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Professional qualification (e.g., CEng or IEng) and membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Project management qualification (e.g., Prince 2) is desirable.
  • Ability to manage engineering projects up to £500,000 independently.
  • Strong technical expertise and experience in contract documentation preparation.
  • Effective communication and reporting skills in English.
  • Competent consultation with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good commercial awareness and ability to mentor junior staff.

Salary (Rate): £30.00
