Summary: The Head of Data Science and AI will lead AI innovation and data science strategy for a government defence sector client, focusing on operationalizing machine learning and enhancing automation. This role involves mentoring a team of data scientists and collaborating with senior stakeholders to align AI initiatives with business objectives. The position requires expertise in AI governance and a strong understanding of responsible AI practices within a Microsoft-centric technology environment. The contract is for 12 months and offers a hybrid working arrangement in Somerset.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute the AI and Data Science strategy, delivering efficiency and customer benefits.
• Lead and mentor a team of data scientists, overseeing technical direction, skill development, and project execution.
• Work with senior stakeholders and executives to align AI initiatives with business objectives.
• Oversee AI governance, ensuring compliance with government and defence standards.
• Stay up to date with industry advancements and emerging AI applications.
• Collaborate with external partners, including other government agencies and industry bodies.
• Provide technical leadership on machine learning deployment, MLOps, and model performance monitoring.

Key Skills:

• Expertise in Data Science & Machine Learning, including supervised/unsupervised learning, deep learning, and generative AI.
• Strong understanding of AI ethics, responsible AI practices, and data governance.
• Technical proficiency in Python, R, or C++ with experience in AI model deployment.
• Experience working with Azure cloud-based data solutions and Microsoft enterprise environments.
• Proven track record in leading data science teams, developing capabilities, and driving AI adoption.
• Ability to engage with senior stakeholders, influence strategy, and communicate complex AI concepts.
• Experience in government, defence, or highly regulated industries is highly desirable.
