Head of Data Science and AI

Summary: The Head of Data Science and AI will lead AI innovation and data science strategy within the government defence sector, focusing on operationalizing machine learning and enhancing automation. This role involves mentoring a team of data scientists and collaborating with senior stakeholders to align AI initiatives with business objectives. The position requires expertise in AI governance and a strong understanding of responsible AI practices. The role is hybrid, based in Somerset, and offers a 12-month contract.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute the AI and Data Science strategy, delivering efficiency and customer benefits.
• Lead and mentor a team of data scientists, overseeing technical direction, skill development, and project execution.
• Work with senior stakeholders and executives to align AI initiatives with business objectives.
• Oversee AI governance, ensuring compliance with government and defence standards.
• Stay up to date with industry advancements and emerging AI applications.
• Collaborate with external partners, including other government agencies and industry bodies.
• Provide technical leadership on machine learning deployment, MLOps, and model performance monitoring.

Key Skills:

• Expertise in Data Science & Machine Learning, including supervised/unsupervised learning, deep learning, and generative AI.
• Strong understanding of AI ethics, responsible AI practices, and data governance.
• Technical proficiency in Python, R, or C++ with experience in AI model deployment.
• Experience working with Azure cloud-based data solutions and Microsoft enterprise environments.
• Proven track record in leading data science teams, developing capabilities, and driving AI adoption.
• Ability to engage with senior stakeholders, influence strategy, and communicate complex AI concepts.
• Experience in government, defence, or highly regulated industries is highly desirable.
