Summary: The Head of Data Science & AI will lead initiatives to enhance efficiency and customer benefits through data science and AI within a government context. This role involves strategizing the responsible use of these technologies, managing a team of data scientists, and collaborating with stakeholders to prioritize projects. The position also requires staying informed on government guidelines and best practices related to AI and data science applications. Additionally, the role includes organizational leadership and outreach initiatives to build knowledge across the wider organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivering efficiency and customer benefits using data science and AI
  • Strategising on the responsible use of data science and AI for automation or new insights
  • Working with stakeholders to prioritise data science, AI and automation projects
  • Driving operationalisation of data science and machine learning by guiding on effective experimentation, deployment of solutions, monitoring of performance, and scaling
  • Team leadership and development for a team of data scientists, including technical and project guidance
  • Line management of Principal Data Scientists and setting objectives for the data science team
  • Working with Technology division senior leadership peers to contribute to the strategic direction of the function
  • Staying up to date with government guidance on the responsible use of AI and translating this into best practice
  • Staying up to date with the use of AI and data science in hydrography and commercial settings to help set team direction and communicate what is possible to stakeholders
  • Leading the guidance and reporting on the responsible use of AI
  • Challenging data decisions that limit the ability to take advantage of new technologies
  • Organisational leadership on the use of AI, whether this be homegrown or in commercial applications
  • Planning and implementing outreach and upskilling initiatives to help build knowledge and skills across the wider organization

Key Skills:

  • Expertise in data science and AI methodologies
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Experience in project management and stakeholder engagement
  • Knowledge of government regulations and best practices regarding AI
  • Ability to drive operationalisation and scaling of data science solutions
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with various stakeholders
  • Experience in hydrography and commercial applications of AI is a plus
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities

Salary (Rate): £1k PD
