Your new company

On behalf of Birmingham City Council, we are recruiting a Governance & Assurance Officer to join a high-profile procurement and governance function.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within one of the UK's largest local authorities, supporting key governance activities that help ensure transparency, accountability and effective decision-making across the organisation.

Working within a fast-paced and collaborative environment, you will play a crucial role in maintaining robust governance standards and supporting senior stakeholders.

Your new role

This is a three-month contract with the potential for extensions, offering flexible working arrangements and a competitive hourly rate.

As a Governance & Assurance Officer, you will lead and coordinate governance and assurance activities within the procurement function, ensuring processes are consistently applied and managed to the highest standard.

You will be responsible for maintaining governance registers, policies and decision records, ensuring documentation is accurate, up to date and audit-ready.

A significant part of the role will involve providing comprehensive secretariat support for procurement governance meetings, including preparing agendas, coordinating papers, producing high-quality minutes, tracking actions and maintaining decision logs within demanding timescales.

You will manage multiple procurement assurance requests, act as a key liaison between governance and procurement teams, and build effective working relationships with senior stakeholders across the organisation.

The role also provides the opportunity to identify and implement process improvements, helping to streamline governance arrangements and enhance efficiency.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will have previous experience providing governance, assurance or senior-level secretariat support within a complex organisation or within procurement.

You will possess excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

You will be an accomplished communicator with experience producing professional minutes, reports and governance documentation for senior audiences.

The ability to work confidently with senior stakeholders, maintain discretion when handling sensitive information and influence effective ways of working is essential.

Strong IT skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital collaboration tools, are also required.

A proactive and continuous improvement mindset will be highly valued, as you will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of governance processes.

What you'll get in return

In return, you will receive a competitive pay rate of £23+ per hour, with potential flexibility depending on experience.

You will gain exposure to senior decision-making forums and play a pivotal role in supporting procurement governance within a major local authority.

This position offers flexible working arrangements, valuable experience within a high-profile service area and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful organisational improvements, with the potential for contract extensions beyond the initial three-month term.
