Summary: The role is for a contract SQL Server DBA focused on implementing Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) with Extensible Key Management (EKM) for production databases over a 6-month period. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating with various teams. Experience in regulated sectors such as Banking or Insurance is essential. The role is hybrid, requiring 2-3 days per week in central London and is classified as inside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, design, and implementation of TDE with EKM on designated SQL Server databases, adhering to security best practices and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with multiple business teams (eg, Development, QA, Infrastructure, Security) to understand requirements, define testing strategies, and manage the impact of encryption on applications and services.
- Assess, analyse, and document potential performance implications of TDE implementation and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Work with Infrastructure teams to configure EKM provider and integrate with relevant security systems.
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for encryption implementation, including performance testing, application functionality testing, and disaster recovery scenarios.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues or performance bottlenecks related to TDE and EKM during and after implementation.
- Document all encryption processes, configurations, and best practices, ensuring clear knowledge transfer to the internal team upon project completion.
- Provide clear and concise communication to technical and non-technical stakeholders regarding project progress, risks, and impact.
- Some out-of-hours/weekend work will be required.
Key Skills:
- Proven experience as a SQL Server DBA, with in-depth knowledge of SQL Server 2016/2019/2022 administration.
- Extensive experience with Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and Extensible Key Management (EKM) implementation and management.
- Strong understanding of database security principles, access controls, and compliance regulations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage project tasks, and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting SQL Server databases.
- Knowledge of backup and recovery procedures for encrypted databases.
