Summary: The Financial Controller role is a 6-month maternity cover position reporting to the Finance Director, responsible for overseeing financial accounting and reporting functions. The position requires a proactive approach to developing and automating processes to support the company's growth strategy. The ideal candidate will possess relevant experience and strong organizational skills to manage a finance team effectively. Key responsibilities include ownership of financial processes, cash flow management, and collaboration with various stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reporting processes – daily, weekly & monthly
  • Continuous improvement & automation of controls & processes
  • Ownership of the month end process
  • Ownership of the balance sheet
  • Cash flow & treasury management
  • Supervision of all members in the Finance team
  • Management of AP & AR, including any annual leave cover as needed
  • VAT & other statutory returns
  • Ownership of reporting systems (SunSystems, Q&A & Power BI)
  • Ad hoc business partnering & analysis as required
  • Assisting with FP&A
  • Lease schedule management (a sound working knowledge of IFRS16 required)
  • Assisting in prep of monthly Board pack

Key Skills:

  • Professional accountancy qualification (ACA / ACCA / CIMA)
  • Previous experience in working for an AIM listed company / PLC preferable
  • Proven track record in an industry finance management position
  • Relevant sector experience highly desirable, particularly the use of SunSystems Accounting Software
  • A team player with the ability to develop & coach members of the Finance team
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Advance Excel skills, both functional & presentational
  • An ability to partner with non-finance stakeholders across the business
  • Clear, concise communication across all levels of the business
  • Knowledge of payroll processing and related regulatory requirements
  • Preparation of TBs and consolidation under UK GAAP, plus knowledge of IFRS, particularly IFRS 16
  • Past involvement in finance transformation & new systems / process implementation projects desirable

Purpose of the Role

Reporting into the Finance Director as part of a team of ten, this key role is responsible for ownership and control over the financial accounting and reporting functions of the business. As such, the remit is relatively broad and demands a significant degree of autonomy, however, will also require working closely with the FD to create and maintain a robust financial infrastructure to facilitate the business’ growth strategy. Initial focus will be on; developing and automating processes and controls to achieve timely, accurate data as number of sites and transaction volumes increase; alongside dynamic resource planning and tight resource management to maximise effective use of working capital. The ideal candidate will have adequate relevant experience to hit the ground running – a problem solver; someone who is highly organised & can work to deadlines; have attention to detail; and someone who fits with our VEL culture and values.
