Summary: The Financial Accountant role involves supporting a local council through year-end and audit processes for a minimum of six months. The position requires expertise in public sector accounting, particularly within local government, to prepare statutory accounts and resolve audit queries. The role is hybrid, with mandatory in-office attendance on Wednesdays, and offers the potential for a temporary to permanent transition based on performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare statutory year-end accounts and maintain a changes log, including journal entries.
  • Plan and lead the year-end closedown through to successful audit conclusion.
  • Resolve audit queries efficiently and maintain high standards of accuracy and numeracy throughout the process.
  • Own the numbers and drive progress within the financial department.
  • Work collaboratively in a large, complex public sector environment to meet financial deadlines and requirements.

Key Skills:

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in preparing statutory year-end accounts.
  • Proven track record of planning and leading a year-end closedown to audit conclusion.
  • Strong ability to resolve audit queries and manage financial records accurately.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience working in a large complex public sector organisation; local government experience is highly desirable.
  • CCAB qualification is essential (QBE considered for exceptional candidates).
