Summary: The Field Service Engineer role focuses on the maintenance and service of diesel locomotive engines across Glasgow and Edinburgh. Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out planned modification programmes and reactive maintenance on diesel engines
  • Prepare jobs in advance (tools, parts, documentation) and liaise directly with the customer
  • Operate independently in the field, delivering safe, high-quality work on customer sites
  • Record all work completed accurately and in line with internal procedures
  • Act as the first point of contact on site, resolving minor customer issues and escalating where needed
  • Maintain professional relationships and uphold Wabtec's reputation as a trusted industry partner
  • Identify opportunities for additional work or service improvement and report to management

Key Skills:

  • Experience working on diesel engines, ideally within rail or heavy plant
  • Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills
  • Confident working independently in a field-based role
  • Good communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Ideally NVQ level 3 or equivalent in mechanical discipline
  • Full UK driving licence (essential)

Field Service Engineer (Diesel Locomotive Engines)

Location: Glasgow & Edinburgh (Field-Based)

Contract Type: Long-Term Contract (Temp to Perm Opportunity)

Hours: 45 hours per week + overtime

Pay: £29.50 per hour umbrella / £22.50 per hour paye (doe / flexible)

Rate: Competitive hourly rate + van + expenses + on-call allowance

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Field-Based Product Support Engineer to work across Glasgow and Edinburgh, supporting the maintenance and service of diesel engines used in locomotives. This is a hands-on, field service position working with a range of diesel units, including Class 156s, 155s, Turbostars, 170s and similar rolling stock. This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established engineering business on a long-term contract with the potential for a permanent role.

Role Details & Benefits:

  • Field-based between Glasgow and Edinburgh - travel required between sites
  • Company van provided for work use, including fuel and expenses
  • 45 hours per week, Monday to Friday
  • Overtime available at flat rate
  • On-call rota every other weekend
  • £73 per on-call day (paid regardless of call-out)
  • Hourly rate paid on top if called out
  • Long-term contract with the potential to go permanent
