Summary: The Estates Operations Officer role at a leading university in London involves providing operational support to the Division of Biosciences, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and managing laboratory equipment maintenance. The position requires collaboration with central services and oversight of estates projects, including refurbishment and equipment installation. The officer will also lead safety initiatives and manage a team of Operations Assistants while addressing day-to-day operational challenges. This is a 6-month contract position with a focus on maintaining high standards in laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day problems related to Divisional Infrastructure & Safety.
  • Lead core facilities and ensure maintenance standards are upheld.
  • Plan and oversee major and minor building and improvement projects.
  • Issue keys and passes, maintaining building security.
  • Handle emergencies such as floods and power failures on-site.
  • Assist with setting up and clearing stages for equipment handling.
  • Liaise with academic staff and suppliers for equipment procurement.
  • Ensure compliance with Divisional safety procedures.
  • Line manage Operations Assistants both administratively and technically.
  • Deliver staff and student Safety Inductions.
  • Contribute to health and safety policy development and management.
  • Support laboratory and office moves across the Division.
  • Provide out of hours call-out cover for emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Key Skills:

  • Comprehensive understanding of safety legislation.
  • First degree in life sciences or related field, or relevant experience.
  • Basic theoretical knowledge of Life Sciences.
  • Formal qualification in Health and Safety.
  • Experience in a medical or laboratory-based environment.
  • Familiarity with research techniques and equipment.
  • Flexible and proactive work approach.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Experience in project management and equipment procurement.
  • Ability to contribute to laboratory design and specification.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to prioritize workload effectively.
  • Willingness to undertake manual handling duties.
