On behalf of the MOD, we are looking for an Engineering Manager (Inside IR35) for a 6 month hybrid contract based in Bristol.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a central government department with a mission to protect our country and provide the ultimate guarantee of its security and independence, as well as helping to protect its values and interests abroad.

The work really matters; the MOD offers a range of engaging roles which have a direct impact on the quality of services they provide, in many locations across the UK. We support teams working in HR, Primary Health Care, Corporate Services, and many others.

As an Engineering Manager, your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the team in ensuring vessels are safe to operate within the agreed operating envelope and provide sound advice when operation out with the safe envelope is required.
  • Coordinate the efforts of the team to deliver the required outputs.
  • Provide leadership and motivation to the team to ensure members individually and collectively achieve their potential in delivering outputs.
  • Keep abreast of Safety and Environmental Legislation affecting certificates, be aware of best practice in the marine industry to implement those changes that affect ships safety, environment, operational and transition around the globe.
  • Promote a Through Life Management safety culture, bring areas of concern to senior line management. Contribute to timely implementation of the SEMS and Business Instructions for engineering support of in-service ships.
  • Contribute to the achievement of coherent defendable Warship Approval Authority financial planning/management.

PLEASE NOTE: SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

Essential

  • Experience working within a maritime, mechanical engineering, or related technical environment, with the ability to understand, assess and resolve equipment-related issues.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams, including operational users, engineering authorities, technical authorities and customer representatives.
  • Experience applying system safety principles and processes within engineering programmes, including hazard identification, risk assessment, safety assurance, and the management of safety activities throughout the project lifecycle.

Desirable

  • Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives Awareness Level: Awareness (Defence Academy Course Code: OME(A)).
  • Professionally Registered status or demonstration of equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
