Role: Electrical Design Engineer

Location: Culham, Abingdon – 3 days/week on site (non-negotiable)

IR35: In scope

Contract length: until 01/03/2027

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead and support design work on major fusion sub-systems from concept through to detailed design
  • Take ownership of design aspects for assigned systems/components, including repair, replacement and upgrade activities
  • Develop and implement systems for managing design requirements, interfaces and compliance
  • Ensure designs are validated and compliant with design standards and manufacturing/assembly/maintenance methods
  • Deliver projects to the satisfaction of internal and external customers within agreed constraints
  • Produce technical reports, departmental notes and procedures where required
  • Complete/supervise detailed design including electrical drawings, BoMs, cable schedules and associated documentation
  • Apply value engineering and design-for-manufacture principles throughout the design phases
  • Work closely with engineers, technicians, analysts and suppliers, demonstrating strong communication and teamwork

Your background

Essential Experience/skills

Strong C&I experience with a solid electrical engineering background

Relevant qualification: engineering degree, HND/HNC, Level 4/5 apprenticeship or equivalent with solid experience

Proven knowledge of UK regulations and EU directives around electrical safety and compliance

Experience with machinery safety principles and application of BS EN 60204-1

Ideally some exposure to functional safety and process safety

Extensive use of AutoCAD / AutoCAD LT to produce electrical documentation

Understanding of data configuration control

Ability to carry out exploratory design using first principles

Proven capability in engineering design plus good working knowledge of manufacturing techniques and engineering materials

Knowledge of electrical enclosure/control panel manufacturing techniques

Strong grasp of recognised drawing standards, especially BS EN 61082

Good communication, technical writing and interpersonal skills

Desirable Knowledge and application of BS 7671 18th Edition (qualification is an advantage)

Experience with an electrical CAD package such as Solidworks Electrical (current tool used), EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical
