Summary: The role of Ecologist involves leading the management and protection of a significant ecological site within a rural estate in Wiltshire. The position requires expertise in conservation and land management, focusing on the preservation of protected species and habitats while ensuring legal compliance. The Ecologist will collaborate with various stakeholders and oversee multiple conservation projects, contributing to the estate's ecological integrity. This is an initial 3-month contract with a competitive day rate classified as inside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and implementation of the Rural Estates Ecology Plan.
- Manage and deliver the objectives of the Stone Curlew Conservation Project.
- Oversee conservation compliance across designated SSSI, SPA, and SAC sites.
- Liaise with statutory bodies, including Natural England and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
- Produce ecological reports and provide expert advice for operations and infrastructure development.
- Maintain ecological datasets and systems, including management of Recorder 2006.
- Act as Site Manager for the Environmental Change Network Project.
- Support Habitat Regulation Assessments, Sustainability Appraisals, and conservation risk assessments.
- Contribute to internal and external communications regarding ecological matters.
- Monitor and maintain the integrity of archaeological areas within the estate.
Key Skills:
- Degree (or equivalent) in Ecology or a related environmental discipline.
- Practical experience of managing SSSI, SPA, and SAC sites.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and Environment Act 2021.
- Proven experience in ecological land management and rural conservation best practices.
- Strong interpersonal skills for building collaborative relationships.
- Customer-focused approach with the ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams.
- Understanding of MOD land use protocols is highly beneficial.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ecological data systems.
