What does a django contractor do?
As a contract Django, you are hired to build, extend, and maintain web applications and APIs using the Django framework, which is one of the most widely used Python web frameworks in the UK contracting market. Django's batteries-included philosophy makes it particularly well-suited to content-heavy web applications, data-driven platforms, and API backends that need to be built quickly and maintained reliably over time. Contract engagements typically involve developing new Django applications or features, building REST APIs using Django REST Framework, migrating legacy applications to modern Django versions, optimising performance of existing Django codebases, or working within larger Python-based development teams where Django handles the web layer.
Django contractors are expected to be highly proficient in Python and to have deep practical experience with the Django framework, including its ORM, templating engine, admin interface, middleware, and authentication system. Experience building RESTful APIs with Django REST Framework is expected across most back-end and full-stack Django roles. Database knowledge, particularly PostgreSQL which is the most commonly paired database in Django projects, is widely assumed. Familiarity with task queues such as Celery for asynchronous processing, caching with Redis or Memcached, and deployment on cloud platforms including AWS or Heroku is generally assumed at senior level. For full-stack roles, experience with a front-end framework such as React or Vue.js alongside Django is a significant differentiator in the contractor market.
