Summary: The Director of Digital and IT (Shared Service) will lead digital transformation initiatives across councils, focusing on optimizing IT and digital strategies within a complex public sector environment. This role requires a visionary leader with extensive experience in emerging technologies, AI, and data strategy, as well as strong stakeholder engagement and team management skills. The successful candidate will drive innovation in service delivery while ensuring alignment with council priorities and user needs. The position emphasizes collaboration with both internal departments and external partners to enhance digital capabilities and community services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leads on digital transformation activities across the councils to enable council departments to optimise their own transformation opportunities.
- Ensure that all digital services meet user needs and adhere to user focused design principles, this includes the management of the Councils' websites.
- Lead the transformational and operational delivery of Digital & IT services that the organisations rely upon.
- Leading the delivery of the Councils' data strategy and developing the capability to take advantage of AI technologies.
- Deliver projects into the community for example Internet of Things, 5G and connectivity into the Boroughs.
- Creates strategies and approaches to formulate and deliver against Digital & IT technology and service roadmaps.
- Provides secure, stable and supportable operational digital and IT services to the councils and wider customer base.
- Ensures best practice in information governance, and IT security.
- Promotes digital literacy, opportunity and access both within the councils and across their wider communities.
- Enables faster and more collaborative implementation and take-up of digital approaches by working with pan-London and national bodies.
Key Skills:
- Significant experience in leading IT and digital strategies at a senior level, preferably within the public sector.
- A deep understanding of emerging digital technologies, AI, and data strategy, and their application in local government services.
- Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop high-performing teams.
- Proven ability to push AI and data capability while maintaining strong relationships across both councils and external partners.
- Experience consolidating IT estates, managing Legacy tech migration, and driving innovation and creativity in service delivery.
- Experience in improving portfolio management, pipelining, and delivery, ensuring digital initiatives align with council priorities.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, fostering trust and confidence at a senior level.
- A strategic mindset focused on balancing the needs of both councils while driving efficiency and delivering measurable outcomes.
- Proven ability to drive delivery, capacity, and capability within teams while leading large-scale transformation initiatives.
