DevOps Engineer contractors are brought in to build out a DevOps capability from scratch, to implement specific tooling or practices, to provide specialist expertise within a platform team, or to lead a DevOps transformation on a technology programme.
The technical skills expected of DevOps Engineer contractors are specific and well-defined. Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code using Terraform is a near-universal requirement, alongside strong container and orchestration skills with Docker and Kubernetes. Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps is widely expected. Cloud platform expertise on at least one of AWS, Azure, or GCP is essential, as most modern DevOps work is cloud-centric.
