Summary: The role of Electrical Protection Design Engineer involves supporting the design, delivery, and commissioning of protection systems for electrical substations. The engineer will act as a technical interface between customers and the engineering team, contributing to major grid automation and transmission projects. This position requires strong technical expertise and the ability to lead projects from design through to commissioning. The role is hybrid, requiring three days on-site in Stafford each week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical delivery across the full project lifecycle — from design to commissioning.
  • Analyse customer specifications and develop technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with customers, project managers, and internal teams on technical scope, risks, and budgets.
  • Specify IEDs, software configurations, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Investigate and resolve protection-related technical issues and support site teams.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).

Key Skills:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 5+ years’ experience in protection and electrical design engineering for substations.
  • Strong understanding of protection functions, schemes, and cubicle design.
  • Experience with relay configuration and network studies.
  • Willingness to travel (UK & international) with a valid driving licence.
  • Knowledge of LV, MV & HV protection and automation systems.
  • Experience with substation automation and protection relays.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
