Summary: The Design Engineer role focuses on the development and documentation of structural, vessel, and pipework solutions within the FMCG process equipment sector. The position involves working on projects related to food, beverage, and utility applications, ensuring designs meet industry standards. The engineer will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to deliver practical and economical designs. Key responsibilities include creating CAD models, managing BOMs, and supporting equipment optimization efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop process machinery including mixers, conveyors, filling systems, and ancillary processing equipment
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models, GA drawings, and fabrication/manufacturing documentation
  • Apply Design for Manufacture and hygienic design principles to all equipment designs
  • Maintain and modify existing machinery designs
  • Develop and manage BOMs and engineering change records
  • Interpret process requirements including P&IDs and convert them into mechanical design solutions
  • Perform basic mechanical and structural engineering calculations
  • Support equipment performance optimisation and reliability improvements
  • Liaise with suppliers, fabrication teams, and internal project engineers
  • Attend technical and project review meetings where required
  • Support site surveys and design validation activities

Key Skills:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related engineering discipline (2:1 or equivalent preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years SolidWorks and AutoCAD experience
  • Practical experience in process, FMCG, food, beverage, pharmaceutical, or chemical equipment design
  • Understanding of structural mechanics, load analysis, and basic engineering mathematics
  • Knowledge of relevant UK engineering standards and regulatory requirements
  • Experience in Design for Manufacture and production engineering support
  • Strong analytical mindset with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly in written and verbal form

Job Purpose

We are seeking a Design Engineer to join the Engineering design team, supporting the development, modification, and documentation of structural, vessel, and pipework solutions within the FMCG process equipment sector. The role supports liquid and powder process engineering projects across food, beverage, brewery, bakery, dairy, and utility applications, delivering high-quality cradle-to-grave design outputs that meet industry standards and customer requirements. You will work within a multidisciplinary project team, contributing your own engineering ideas while ensuring designs are practical, economical, and suitable for manufacture and installation.
