Databricks Data Engineer - Hybrid/London

About the role

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Data Engineer to join a major data transformation and cloud modernisation programme within a highly regulated banking environment.

You will design, build and maintain scalable data pipelines, support cloud migration initiatives and deliver reliable enterprise data solutions.

This role is ideal for a strong developer and delivery-focused engineer rather than a technical lead.

You should be comfortable working independently, partnering with business and technology stakeholders, and delivering high-quality solutions with minimal supervision.

Contract details

Day rate: £400-£450 per day

Duration: 6 months

Start: ASAP

Location: Hybrid, 2/3 days per week in London

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build and optimise scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines.
  • Develop and maintain data solutions using Databricks, Python and SQL.
  • Support the migration of data assets from legacy platforms to modern cloud architectures.
  • Integrate data from enterprise systems, including Oracle databases.
  • Build reusable data engineering frameworks and promote best practice.
  • Maintain high standards of data quality, integrity, security and performance.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and implement sustainable fixes.
  • Translate business requirements into robust technical solutions in collaboration with architects, analysts and delivery teams.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and support knowledge transfer.

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong commercial experience as a Data Engineer in a large enterprise environment.
  • Hands-on expertise with Databricks.
  • Advanced SQL and strong Python development skills.
  • Extensive experience with Oracle databases.
  • Proven delivery of data pipelines and integration solutions.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms, data modelling, performance optimisation and data quality controls.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with stakeholders.

Desirable experience

  • Banking or financial services experience.
  • Experience in regulated environments.
  • Exposure to Azure data services.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices for data engineering.
  • Experience supporting cloud migration or modernisation programmes.
  • Familiarity with data governance and data lineage principles.

You will ideally bring at least five years of data engineering experience, strong development capability and a proactive, self-sufficient approach.

You should be able to quickly understand business needs and turn them into dependable technical solutions within a complex organisation.

Security Clearance

This temporary contract is inside IR35 and will require working under the direction of the client delivery manager as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidate will follow established delivery processes and working practices.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and be eligible for UK Security Vetting at SC/DV level.

Clearance sponsorship will be provided where required.

Due to the nature of the work, candidates should meet the relevant residency requirements.
