Database Engineer

Introduction

We’re looking for a Database Engineer to join a major technology transformation programme within financial services.

This is a hands-on engineering role – not a traditional DBA position.

You’ll work across Oracle, PostgreSQL and NoSQL platforms, helping build, automate and optimise highly available enterprise database environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Engineer and support Oracle and PostgreSQL database platforms.
• Work with Cassandra, MongoDB and/or Couchbase.
• Automate database provisioning, configuration and deployments.
• Implement Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD practices.
• Optimise database performance, queries and indexing.
• Support high availability, replication and resilience.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
• Partner with developers, architects and infrastructure teams.
• Support database migrations and technology modernisation.
• Develop reusable tooling and automation to eliminate manual DBA processes.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Experience as a Database Engineer / DBA.
• Hands-on Oracle and PostgreSQL experience.
• Experience with at least one NoSQL/distributed database – Cassandra, MongoDB or Couchbase.
• Strong SQL, performance tuning and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with replication, clustering and high availability.
• Strong automation/scripting skills – Python, Shell, Ansible or Terraform.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD and Git.
• Enterprise production experience with business-critical systems.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Strong Cassandra experience.
• Financial services / banking experience.
• Cloud platforms – AWS, Azure or GCP.
• Kubernetes / containerised databases.
• Database migration and modernisation experience.
• Experience across multiple NoSQL technologies.
• Cloud / DevOps certifications.
