Role Description
Key Responsibilities / Requirements
UAT & production support Provide responsive DBA support during UAT cycles and BAU operations. Triage and resolve database-related incidents (availability, performance, connectivity, capacity, job failures, data issues) and drive issues to closure.
Hands-on database administration (SQL Server & Sybase) Perform core DBA activities: installation/configuration support, patch coordination, database builds, upgrades, migrations (where applicable), and environment readiness. Manage and monitor DB health: backups/restores, integrity checks, index/statistics maintenance, space/capacity management, and scheduling/monitoring jobs.
Performance & stability Diagnose and remediate performance issues (locking/blocking, long-running queries, indexing strategy, tempdb/log contention, poorly performing stored procedures). Proactively monitor and tune database performance with an operational mindset (reduce incidents, improve resilience).
Data protection/recovery Ensure appropriate backup strategies, restore testing, and recovery procedures are in place and understood. Support recovery activities (point-in-time restore, object-level recovery where possible), with clear documentation and control.
Security & access management Administer roles/permissions in line with least-privilege principles, supporting onboarding/offboarding and audit requirements. Support encryption/credential management where required and work with security teams on remediation actions.
Collaboration and escalation Work closely with application support, infrastructure, and vendor teams; translate technical findings into clear impacts and next steps. Provide clear handovers/escalations with evidence (query plans, logs, wait stats, blocking graphs, error outputs).
Adaptability and communication Comfortable in a fast-moving divestment environment with changing priorities and tight timelines. Able to work beyond the DBA role providing generic support to our user base when and if required. Strong written/verbal communication; able to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
Key Skills (must have)
- Strong operational experience as a DBA across: Microsoft SQL Server (2016/2019/2022)
- Sybase ASE (16)
- Strong SQL and troubleshooting capability: Query tuning, indexing, execution plan analysis Locking/blocking analysis, deadlock triage, transaction log management Backup/restore strategy and execution (including restore testing). Monitoring and alerting discipline; ability to create/adjust thresholds and dashboards.
Nice to Have
- Automation/scripting (PowerShell).
- Exposure to audit/regulatory controls, change management, and ITIL processes.
- Experience supporting vendor or packaged banking applications.
Candidate Profile (what “good” looks like)
Calm under pressure, structured problem solver, strong ownership from triage through resolution.
Strong documentation habits (runbooks, recovery steps, standard changes).
Comfortable working directly with UAT teams and application owners to isolate root causes (app vs DB vs infrastructure).
